In April, the Ambassador visited Lyon to talk about Brexit and address some of the consequent uncertainties that are affecting British and French communities living on either side of the Channel. He will be visiting again on 13 September to follow up on this discussion.
The Brexit negotiations formally began on 19 June, in a constructive atmosphere. One of the first areas of discussion was citizens’ rights, and you may have seen that Prime Minister Theresa May has set out details of the UK’s position on this. It remains a key objective to give certainty to the three million EU citizens living in Britain, and to agree with the EU a reciprocal deal which gives guarantees to British citizens living in the European Union. We know how important this is for all the British and French citizens who bring so much to both countries.

Due to space constraints, we only have the capacity to host 40 people. It is a priority for the Ambassador to meet and talk with Brits living in the region, so the event will be in English.

Michel BARNIER devient très tôt élu de la Savoie en Haute-Tarentaise et préside le Conseil général dix-sept ans jusqu’en 1999. Il est organisateur avec Jean-Claude KILLY, des derniers jeux olympiques ayant eu lieu en France, les jeux olympiques d’Albertville en 1992. Parlementaire national puis européen, il a occupé plusieurs poste s ministériels de premier plan entre 1993 et 2009, comme ministre de l’Environnement en 1993, ministre des Affaires européennes en 1995, ministre des Affaires étrangères en 2004 puis ministre de l’Agriculture en 2007. Commissaire européen à deux reprises de 1999 à 2004 en charge de la politi que régionale puis de 2009 à 2014 comme commissaire en charge du marché intérieur et des services, il a à ce titre conduit la réforme financière la plus ambitieuse jamais engagée en Europe. Il est aujourd’hui le négociateur de l’Union Européenne avec le Royaume-Uni
